Felix among closely-matched frontrunners in Imola free practice

FP1Felix got the penultimate FIA Formula 3 European Championship round of the season off to a promising start at Imola, after going fourth fastest in a closely-fought free practice session on Friday morning.

Like in the official in-season test at the Italian venue earlier this week, running was halted by red-flag stoppages on several occasions – most notably when Felix’s Mücke Motorsport team-mate Lucas Auer crashed at the Villeneuve chicane after just six laps and wrecked his Dallara against the barriers. The Austrian was out for the rest of the session, and appeared in bandage in the paddock following the accident. Auer is still expected to take part in this afternoon’s qualifying session.

Italian home favourites Prema Powerteam led a one-two as Ferrari protégé Antonio Fuoco topped the times on a 1m36.991s ahead of championship leader Esteban Ocon (1m37.120s). Third quickest was Formula 1-bound Max Verstappen on a 1m37.135s, with Felix fourth – just fractions behind the Dutchman - thanks to a late 1m37.151s lap.

Qualifying is set to take centre stage at 14.20 local time this afternoon.
